These marmosets were derived from a breeding colony at Tokyo Metropolitan Institute for Neuroscience. The age of the animals ranged from 2 years 0 months to 3 years 2 months. In the present study, we prepared histological sections of the marmoset brain, converted them to digital images, and constructed the database serving the high-resolution digital images via the Internet.Įxperiments were performed in one male and two female adult common marmosets weighing 350–510 g. However the data obtained from the common marmoset are still absent in that database. It provides high-resolution and zoomable digital images of brain sections of various species (humans, rhesus monkeys, cats, rats, etc.). One of the largest Internet databases of the histological brain sections is open to the public at (Miluka et al., 2007).

For studies of the brain function of the common marmosets, especially for stereotaxic surgery of the common marmosets, conventional print atlases of the marmoset brain have been available (Saavedra and Mazzuchelli, 1969, Stephan et al., 1980, Palazzi and Bordier, 2008). The common marmosets are small monkeys which can be easily maintained in laboratory because of their availability, costs, size, and ease of breeding in laboratory conditions. In recent years, the use of the common marmoset ( Callithrix jacchus, a species of New World monkeys) as an alternative primate species is apparently increasing in neuroscience.
